ABOUT US

Glossop Choral Society is a non-audition but musically ambitious choir that brings together a wide range of people who share a love of singing and performing choral music. We rehearse weekly and perform three concerts a year. Performances cover a wide spectrum of music, from the classical choral works to lighter modern pieces, and an annual joint Christmas concert with Tintwistle Brass Band (though COVID has temporarily put a stop to this).

The choir was founded in 1949 by Margaret Lomas who set up a youth choir in the town.  The story goes that as the young people grew into adults, it then became an adult choir.  The Choral Society has undertaken a variety of choral classics (see Past concerts page) as well as some modern compositions and styles.  Some of our members have been singing with us for over thirty years and three members have been singing with the choir for fifty years!  The choir has taken part in a number of projects such as BBC Songs of Praise and the 2009 BBC drama “All the Small Things”.  The choir celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2009 and looks forward to celebrating 70 years of singing in 2019.

We have many regulars in our audience and whether you are local or from further afield you are assured of a warm welcome.  Come and enjoy music with us, either to sing or as a member of the audience.
